Chandra grahanam means lunar eclipse. Where sun, earth, and moon are aligning in a straight line. Moon enters the shadow of the earth, so the moon is not able to reflect sunlight. Zone of zero sunlight or its reflected ray (umbra). Sunlight plays an important role to shower positive energy. The 'vacuum' zone of zero sunlight will be a good opportunity for negative elements to be in force. The absence of sunlight, an increase in the ability to pull out water by the moon, and an increase in ray emitting by Rahu combined in the umbra zone, gives a maximum negative impact on all in the shadow path. The effect is very slow and takes a long time.
Both sun and moon have their ability to pull water or have an effect on it. Moon is able to pull a mass of water, we can see clearly through the low tide and high tide. Both have their own gravitational force. So, during the eclipse, the changes in the force of gravitational of both Solar bodies will affect everything on earth. Mostly water-related materials including humans, idols, food, etc. The negative effect is very subtle, in the long run. There are no immediate effects.

Humans in standing positions, the water element will be concentrated more in the upper part of the body, head, brain. During the eclipse, it is believed that ability of the moon to pull or diffuse out water on a molecular level from non-living and living cells. So if the liquids pulled out from particular important cells which involved in the formation of the embryo in pregnant ladies might affect the baby in term of deformation, the disappearance of liquids from brain cells will affect on a bigger scale on psychology and psychiatry, etc.
To understand better, we need to study the analogy of a computer’s motherboard processor. The processor depends on bits that keep or support information. If a few of its bits in the motherboard malfunctions (loss of energy… ), this will corrupt the files,... We called it a virus infection (attack). In some cases, some commands will not be processed by the bits, which will jeopardize the whole process because the virus occupies a particular bit.
In the same way, in a pregnant woman, the cells which lost its liquids due to eclipse might be infused with some other unwanted agents in the void space or it remained void. This is a possibility of the effect on pregnant women. The children might born with a deformity. I am not a scientist, need further studies on the issue to verify it.
2. God, Temple, and Murthy (idol)
Temple and God are not the same. Temple structure related to yantra, mantra, and tantra. Temple got certain agamic rules that are needed to be followed. God is beyond everything. No planetary effects on God. The scriptures did not really mention about temple closure during an eclipse because temples were introduced later.
In terms of temple closure, it is a must. All agamic compliant temples should be closed.
There is no parihara or remedies to cover during the time of the eclipse. There are only tirukappu (protection) and parihara after the eclipse. Tirukappu means to close the temple, add with certain ingredients to the Moorthy such as arugam grass to re-counter eclipse effects. Most probably the liquids from the grass are absorbed more than the Murthy. Parihara is the cleansing process through abhisheka. If the temple is not closed, then the Murthy will be affected, the ray released out from Murthy will be defective, it will turn harmful for the devotees. It is not an immediate effect, but the effect takes a long time. Thus, the Murthy needs to be reinstalled, a mini Kumbha abhiseka need to be performed to rectify the defect. So to reduce the effect of the eclipse, it is best to close the temple.
Performing rituals and prayers in the temple during the eclipse should be completely avoided. Because physically the person who performs the ritual will face the pull out of liquids from the body. Then the voids will be replaced by Rahu (air elements ) effect. Further, the defected Murthy will give more harm. Rahu’s negative ‘blessing’ will be earned. Taking over the positive energy replaced with malefic.
Rahu in power.
Negative elements will be in more power during the eclipse. To understand this, we must look into the scriptures. We all knew about the churning of the milky ocean by devas and asuras. The amrita (divine nectar). The amrita reached Vishnu and was shared among the devas. There was a demon (Svarbhanu) disguised as deva to get the amrita. This demon had been noticed by Sun and Moon, but the demon had drunk the amrita, so he became powerful. Then they informed Vishnu. Vishnu cut the demon which turns into Rahu and Ketu. Since then, Rahu and Ketu looking for opportunities to revenge back.
During a lunar eclipse, the ray of the sun will not reach the earth's surface during the night, all the other time moon reflects the ray. So, during the eclipse, Rahu and Ketu will be in full force to create defects that are very subtle to see through gross eyes. The malefic nature of the Rahu and Ketu needs to keep in mind.
Back to the temple, the 'voids' will be replaced by negative elements of Rahu and Ketu as the analogy of computer viruses. Rahu will be in a full force on the statue (Murthy) if it remains exposed. Those doing prayers, fulfilling vows will be controlled or affected by Rahu and Ketu. The effects will not be on immediate nature.
Hindu Scriptures.
We should not forget about the eclipse effects mentioned in many of our Hindu scriptures. In Mahabharata. Krishna used his prediction ability on eclipse to save Arjuna from the war. It is important to understand the eclipse effect in order to be safe. To reduce the effect there are verses in Rigveda. Also mentioned in Ramayana, Surya Sidharta, Bhagavata Purana, and many more.
Case of Real History.
In real history, the effect of the eclipse cannot be seen or not noticed because its effect takes a long time. There is one known incident of the eclipse effect. It can be noticed when we look into the history of Siam. One of the King, King Rama 1 (if not mistaken), was very adamant to study eclipse even though had been advised not to. But later he was pronounced as lost of mind and jailed by his successor. According to the story mentioned, he went out to study the phenomena. After some time, he became insane. We don't know whether it is because of eclipse or other reasons but it is believed so. This is the only known incident in history.
Does eclipse only affect certain people?
No. It affects everyone, but the only thing is the real bad consequences that take place for those who are in a weaker condition not only in terms of pregnancy or physical but also psychology, bad planetary transition, those who have moon in a bad location in the birth astrology chart and karmic debt. Good and bad happenings do not recognize(depends) on race, religion, etc. It happens to everyone. Hindus have knowledge of this, the others don't.
Food exposed during the eclipse.
Food also contains water elements. The void made by the moon will be replaced by Rahu (negative air element). Thus one who eats also will carry the malefic effects together. So, should be avoided. Only newly cooked food can be eaten.
