Answers.
1.No. Karma works differently to humans compared to animals and plants.
Humans collect both merit and demerit of karma while animals and plants were just settling the karmic debt account in order to go for the next birth. Humans have a sixth sense/ thinking ability to decide good and bad, thus they choose what they want. While animals and plants do what's prescribed for them in genetics, in another way, the atmas of animals and plants in their ‘jail’ terms.
2.Heavens and Hells do exist as per scriptures from Garuda Purana (21), Srimad Bhagavatam (28) to Siva Purana. Numbers may vary. Only those experienced the truth were able to describe these heavens ( 7 upper lokas), and hells (7 lower lokas). Sages did experience. Don't forget that the universe is macro cosmic and our body is micro cosmic, the reflection of the same, thus sages experiencing from within.
And definitely not as in Abrahamics. They believe they will settle there permanently at one entry.
But in Hinduism, when an atma leaves the body, it will undergo the judgement, papa and punya karma will destine the mind/ manas. Based on the mind condition when reaching Yamaloka, the next destination will be set.
Shvetashvatara Upanishad 5.7 mentioned about three paths after death, that are Devayana (path of Devas), Pitryana (path of fathers/human) and Tiryanmarga (path of the lowest birth, animals and plants).
The destination might be the hells for more tormention until settle certain accounts, or to heavens to enjoy the fruits for certain periods of time in Deva lokas etc., or reborn as animals or plants to pay certain karmic debts, or born as human to continue the journey to upgrade the atma's karmic account, or reach Moksha liberated from Samsara cycles.
3.All the above, karmic account works based on the Dharma. Dharma means any action that's reaping punya/good karma only, in other words do the right thing, stay within righteousness. Any action which is accumulating bad karma is adharma.
The elders did mention it.
"Tannaku minjiyathu dharmamum dhanamum than"... But unfortunately some people changed to."Tannaku minjiyathu than dharmamum dhanamum" .
What is left/remains to us when we leave the body is the Dharma we did, the good karmic actions, including praying, helping, and the dhana / contributions to Brahm (praying), Devas (yagnas), Pitrus (tarpanam/ shradha, pindas), Bhutas (nature, plants, animals) and Manusyas (humans). Only the punya/dharma will walk with you to help you to get across the journey to next birth.
